Man arrested with stolen police equipment after chase through two counties – WSOC TV

MONROE, N.C. — An Indian Trail man who had a bulletproof vest and other items stolen from a federal agency was arrested Tuesday night after a chase through two counties, Monroe police said Wednesday. He is suspected of being a police impersonator, authorities said.

MPD detectives attempted to stop a Toyota Camry with a fake license plate around 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

However, 32-year-old Roger Desmond Burns III is said to have driven into the patrol car of a Union County sheriff’s deputy and fled the scene of the accident. A chase ensued.

Burns, driving recklessly at high speeds and endangering the public, led authorities to Interstate 485 in Mecklenburg County.

He ignored a red light and drove into oncoming traffic.

The chase continued onto Providence Road, where a Union County Sheriff’s deputy forced the vehicle to stop, disabling it and ending the chase.

Officers arrested Burns for stealing federal equipment, including a bulletproof vest, handcuffs, agent badges and police patches, MPD said.

He also had a replica pistol, a holster and removable flash lights.

The Camry was also reported stolen in York County.

He was charged with assault on a government official with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, trafficking in opiates, destruction of evidence, possession of methamphetamine and evading arrest.

He is being held at the Union County Detention Center with bail set at $750,000.
