Neighbors shocked after man shot in Russell neighborhood

The Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in the Russell neighborhood. Officials said they were called just before midnight Sunday near the 2500 block of West Chestnut. A man had been shot and died at the scene. Neighbors say they are shaken by the violence: “Every time there is a death, it’s sad.” It means someone’s family is grieving,” said Kurtariq Muhammad.Dr. Eddie Woods is the CEO of No More Red Dots Inc. Her organization works to intervene and de-escalate violence before and after a shooting. They also support the families of the victims. As law enforcement continues to investigate, he hopes the community can become more committed to making their neighborhoods safer. “We need to teach communities how to take care of themselves a little bit.” “How can we make sure their neighborhoods aren’t that conducive to shootings in the first place,” Woods said. There have been at least 120 non-fatal shootings and 56 homicides in the metro this year, according to the Louisville Metro Gun Violence Dashboard. Woods says preventing gun violence must be an ongoing effort that requires continued investment and collaboration from leaders and neighbors. “Everyone has to do something.” We have to start treating it, like we did with cancer, like we did with smoking. Once everyone got behind it, we made some progress, we made some steps, but until we do that, we’re just spinning our wheels,” Woods said. The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating and there are no known suspects at this time.
