Death by dogs

BALTIMORE – When two stray pit bulls went on the run in West Baltimore on Friday night, a family sought shelter in their home and watched in horror as the two pounced on 54-year-old Shelia Jones.

“‘They’re grabbing a lady. They’re grabbing a lady.’ So I was about to walk out, but then I thought, ‘Oh, there’s two dogs out there. I’m not going to lie. There’s nothing I can do.’ So I just called the police,” said Ron Smith, who lives in the alley where Jones was attacked.

According to witnesses, one of the dogs bit her in the neck and she later died from the injuries. But the dogs weren’t finished yet.

“As officers began to clear the area of any roaming individuals for their own safety, the dogs returned and began attacking another victim,” said Baltimore Police Detective Vernon Davis.

William Fortune was walking down North Pulaski Street and saw them attack his 67-year-old neighbor.

“I saw a pit bull on the lady’s arm, so I kicked it, and it just jumped on me, and another pit bull grabbed the back of my arm, and I was like, ‘Shoot that thing. Shoot that thing,'” Fortune recalled.

An officer used a taser on one of the dogs, causing it to release its grip on its luck and run away.

Officers shot one of the dogs and it has since been euthanized while animal control took the second dog into their care.

Now Fortune bears the scars of the attack and is receiving medical treatment while police continue to try to locate the animals’ owners.

“Whoever trained these dogs trained them wrong. They attacked everyone out here,” said the Good Samaritan. “Now I have to get a rabies shot every three days.”

A painful regime that comes at his own expense after risking his life to save another.
