NTSB releases report on June plane crash that killed two people near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KOLO) – The NSTB is releasing a new report on a June plane crash near South Lake Tahoe that killed two people.

Raphael Jones Jr., 74, and Jeanette Shriver Singer, 80, died in the crash.

The NTSB report states that the Luscombe 8A aircraft was significantly damaged in the crash. The NTSB calls it an accident.

The aircraft had been the subject of an FAA alert because a concerned family member had reported that neither pilot nor passenger had arrived at their intended destination, Lake Tahoe Airport in South Lake Tahoe.

Family members said they had spoken to the pilot earlier in the day, who told them they would be delayed and would arrive at the airport around 3:30 p.m. on June 12.

The plane was found the next morning by local police in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest at an altitude of 8,000 feet, about 10 miles south of Lake Tahoe Airport.

According to the report, an investigation of the crash scene revealed that the plane came to rest upside down in a clearing near an access road. The NTSB says the plane first struck a 75-foot tree and part of its tail and tail assembly became lodged in the treetop.

The main wreckage was about three meters behind the tree.
