Anti-Israel camp at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York cleared, demonstrators arrested

metro

The anti-Israel camp at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan was evacuated on Tuesday evening – after dozens of protesters were arrested for refusing to end their rally.

NYPD officers wearing hard hats and zip ties burst into the crowd of hundreds just 10 minutes after announcing that those who failed to leave the West 27th Street campus would be charged with trespassing.

“Students, students, you make us proud!” The crowd chanted as their buddies were loaded onto an NYPD corrections bus just before midnight.

Within 30 minutes, a university cleaning team cleared the camp and dragged the tents away from the property.

It was not immediately clear whether FIT gave the NYPD the green light to arrest the protesters — as Columbia did twice with its students last month.

Before police moved in, hundreds of protesters played games like Connect 4 and Jenga, drew on the ground with chalk and ate cookies.

The only argument appeared to arise when an officer scolded a protester for throwing candy into the crowd, telling her it was dangerous and could hit someone in the eye.

“Did I hit someone in the eye?” she asked her friends urgently in front of the police officer.

“NO!” they scoffed back.

Police began monitoring the peaceful demonstration for two hours before any arrests were made.

Throughout the demonstration, demonstrators insulted officers as they maintained the cordon.
