Bodycam footage shows police in Southern California shooting a man who attacked an officer

Fontana police have released body camera footage from a February incident in which an officer shot and injured a man who was allegedly attacking another officer.

An officer shot and killed 56-year-old Alan Metka after a traffic stop on February 9 in the city of Yucaipa. Fontana police released video Thursday showing the incident from the body cameras of the two officers involved.

The video began with one of the officers, referred to as a “primary officer,” speaking to Metka after pulling him over for not having a front license plate and for having tinted windows. The pair begin talking about Metka’s criminal history when Metka admits to serving eleven months in prison for possession of explosives.

At that point, the lead officer asked Metka if there was anything illegal in his vehicle. Metka said that was not the case.

Metka then exits the vehicle and is asked by the lead officer to speak to his partner. He asked Metka again if he had any illegal items or weapons in his possession, and Metka said “no.”

The officer then returns to his patrol car for a few brief seconds.

The female officer, referred to as a “secondary officer,” then begins patting down Metka.

In her body camera footage, she asks Metka, “What is this?” while patting down his right front pocket, to which he responds, “My gun.” He then appeared to reach for the gun, leading to a fight between the two.

The lead officer’s footage shows Metka holding the secondary officer in a headlock. She then yelled, “He has a gun,” prompting the lead officer to repeatedly yell, “Let it go.”

When Metka refused, the lead officer fired a single shot at Metka, wounding him. The video shows Metka lying in a pool of blood and he can be heard moaning in pain.

Fontana Police Chief Michael Dorsey said Metka received medical attention at the scene and was transported to a local hospital. He survived his injuries and was charged with assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon.

The officers were uninjured in the incident. Metka’s weapon was recovered at the scene.

Dorsey said Metka, who is awaiting trial, has an “extensive criminal history” with multiple weapons and assault arrests. The incident remains under investigation by the San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office.
