1 dead, 6 injured in Maplewood Park in New York

Police in upstate New York are searching for several people in connection with a mass shooting that broke out in a park on Sunday evening that left one person dead and at least six others injured.

At around 6:20 p.m., several shots were fired in Maplewood Park in Rochester, where a large group of people were picnicking and enjoying the summer day, officials with the Rochester New York Police Department said.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting or how many people fired, said Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello. The incident occurred “while everyone was outside grilling and having fun,” he said.

One person – “an adult in his 20s” – died in the shooting, a second person suffered life-threatening injuries and five others suffered “relatively minor injuries,” Bello said. He added that it was possible that other victims of the shooting had not yet been identified.

Rochester Police continue to investigate a mass shooting in Maplewood Park in Rochester on July 29, 2024, the morning after that left one person dead and at least six others injured.

Rochester Police Chief David Smith said the group had been in the park “all afternoon” picnicking when shots were fired. Smith said officers are “looking for more than one person,” but it was not clear if the shooter or shooters involved were part of the group or if they came from outside the park and fired shots.
