One person dies in car crash involving Amish horse-drawn carriage in Lewis County

LOWVILLE, NY (WSYR-TV) — On Sunday, July 14, at approximately 7:25 p.m., New York State Police were called to an accident involving a car and an Amish horse-drawn carriage on State Route 12 in Lowville.

According to police, a 40-year-old man from Copenhagen in Lewis County was driving a 2020 Ford Escape when he crashed into the back of a buggy traveling in the same direction.


According to NYSP, the man drove away after the collision and left the scene of the accident.

All five occupants of the buggy were ejected and a 21-year-old man was found dead at the scene, the NYSP reported.

A 21-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, an 18-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy were also injured.

The two men were taken to Lewis County Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The two women suffered minor injuries, the NYSP said.

The driver of the Ford Escape was later found at his home. State police say charges will not be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.
