The deadline for County Clerk Wanda Halbert’s hearing and suspension is approaching

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The state’s motion to remove Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert from office this week is making its way through the courts. Within four days, the case had already been assigned to two different judges.

According to the Shelby County Circuit Court, Halbert was subpoenaed Monday when the state filed a motion to impeach him. The next day, Judge Cedrick Wooten filed a motion to remove him.

On Wednesday, Halbert’s case was transferred to another judge.

“Wanda Halbert will have her day in court. She is entitled to a jury trial in connection with her impeachment,” said Senator Brent Taylor. “Although this is a jury trial, it is not a criminal charge.”

Taylor says this has been a long time coming after years of complaints from residents and other elected officials.

The Hamilton County prosecutor completed the investigation and filed a motion with the court on Monday to hold a hearing and suspend Halbert within the next five days. That five-day window ends this Friday.

WREG reached out several times this week without receiving a response from Halbert. She spoke with WREG after the county’s budget meeting last week.

“The bottom line is we don’t have the resources to get the job done the way it needs to be done,” Halbert said.

As Friday approaches, possible suspension and removal is still underway.
