FORECAST FIRST WARNING: Great heat and further heavy rain on the way

Minnesota’s weather agency has issued a first warning for SundayFather’s Day Sunday is expected to be mostly dry. The caveat: It will be hot and humid, with highs in parts of the state reaching just above 95 degrees.

Due to the heat and humidity, temperatures could be between 95 and 100 degrees for most of the afternoon. Because of this, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. In the evening and overnight hours, an approaching cold front could bring strong or severe storms, but the main focus is on the potential for heavy rain.

Speaking of rain, rain is likely for the first half of the weekend, and that begins another active period of daily rain and storm risks across Minnesota. Saturday will have the highest chance of rain, and the highest chance of rain over the weekend. But even then, it won’t be a washout. Saturday will start dry, then rain chances will increase throughout the afternoon and evening, with most of the rain falling during the overnight hours.

Isolated strong or severe storms are possible, but the focus will be on heavy rain and the risk of flooding as many areas will receive an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain.

Unsettled and stormy weather will continue throughout next week, with several inches of rain possible by next weekend.
