New suspension order for Vineyard Wind during ongoing investigation

BSSE awards new contract for Vineyard Wind 1. (WLNE file)

NEW BEDFORD, Massachusetts (WLNE) — The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) announced a new suspension order for Vineyard Wind on Friday.

The BSEE issued the order to clarify what needs to be done to lift the suspension.

The order came after a turbine generator blade failure occurred on July 13, causing debris to enter the water off the coast of Nantucket.

The company is currently prohibited from generating electricity at any facility and is also prohibited from building additional towers, nacelles or blades for wind turbines.

The order requires the company to submit a risk analysis and mitigation plan to BSEE before a worker is allowed to enter a facility.

The company is not restricted in carrying out activities not listed in the contract.

BSEE said an investigation into the cause and circumstances of the incident is currently underway.
