Two dead and one in hospital after small plane crashes in McKinney, officials say

A small plane crashed into a construction site in McKinney on Thursday, killing two people on board and sending a third to hospital with injuries, authorities said.

At about 10:25 a.m., the plane – a twin-engine Cessna 414 – crashed near Farm to Market Road 546 and County Road 317 shortly after leaving McKinney National Airport, 1508 Industrial Blvd. Two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene and one was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, said Sgt. Kyle Bradford, a Department of Public Safety spokesman. The Dallas Morning News.

Bradford said the names of the dead could not yet be released.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash, federal agency spokespeople confirmed on Thursday.

The circumstances leading to the crash are unclear. Sarah Taylor Sulick, a spokeswoman for the NTSB, said an investigator was en route to the crash site to begin documenting the scene and to receive the plane for further investigation.

In 2023, the NTSB investigated 103 reported cases of aviation accidents in Texas, mostly in general aviation. Texas is typically among the top three states with the most accidents, along with California and Florida, said a former director of the safety board’s investigations division The news earlier this year.

Earlier this month, a 27-year-old pilot died and her co-pilot was hospitalized after their plane crashed during a training flight in Cooke County – the second fatal crash linked to a Denton flight school since 2019.

In May, a 19-year-old student pilot died in a crash in a Johnson County field. A preliminary report on the crash found no evidence of a pre-impact malfunction or mechanical failure.
