St. George’s police chief resigns amid investigation

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCBD) – The city of St. George is looking for a new police chief after its longtime chief resigned amid an ongoing investigation, the mayor confirmed Thursday.

Mayor Kevin Hart told News 2 he has accepted Chief Brett Camp’s resignation effective May 1.

“We appreciate his service to the city and its citizens,” Hart said.

The announcement comes a little more than two months after Camp was suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation by an outside company.

No details were released about the nature of the investigation, but Hart previously told News 2 he did not believe it involved criminal activity.

According to a March 7 post on the city’s Facebook page, the city is currently accepting applications for the position. The application deadline is May 24th at 5 p.m

Camp has been police chief since 2016.
