Nevada State Police launch awareness campaign amid rising number of pedestrian fatalities

As more pedestrians are killed on our roads in communities across the state, the Nevada State Police is launching an educational campaign to raise awareness of the growing problem.

Data from the state’s Department of Public Transportation Safety shows that 131 people have died in a traffic accident so far this year, 45 of whom were pedestrians.

This is an increase of 19% compared to last year, with the two most common reasons being impairment and speeding.

Trooper Shawn Haggstrom said as the issue continues to impact communities throughout the region, state police are launching an educational campaign focused on both pedestrian safety and traffic safety awareness.

What that campaign will look like is still a work in progress, but according to state data, 90% of fatal pedestrian crashes occurred on city streets, most of them in Clark County.

The data shows that most fatal pedestrian accidents occurred between 6 p.m. and midnight, with more than 60% of them occurring at night in areas with street lighting.

The figures also show that half of fatal pedestrian accidents occurred from Thursday to Saturday.
