PDC firefighters continue to investigate the morning Palapa fire

Playa del Carmen, QR – Sparks from a CFE pole are blamed for a late morning palapa fire in downtown Playa del Carmen. On Saturday morning, Playa del Carmen firefighters arrived at a building at 38 Avenue and 10 Street where residents reported the fire.

The building’s tenants called the fire department after they saw the weed smoking on the roof. The smoke quickly turned into flames that eventually consumed the small palapa structure. However, firefighters were able to extinguish it before the fire spread to other surrounding buildings.

According to initial information, civil protection and the fire department are still working on an official cause, which, according to available information, may have been due to a short circuit on a power pole.

The cause of the fire is being investigated as an electrical spark from a nearby pole and wiring harness. Photo: May 18, 2024.

A possible electrical short in a nearby pole that affected the low-lying cables hanging directly above the palapa roof may have created sparks that set the grass on fire.
