Left 4 Dead 2: DDOS attacks ruin games again

Highlights

  • Left 4 Dead 2 players must expect “unplayable” games due to DDOS attacks.
  • This issue was reported months ago, but seems to have flared up again in the last few weeks.
  • The perpetrator is supposed to find targets in games and add them to a “list” of players he wants to hit with DDOS attacks.

Left 4 Dead 2 players say the game is currently “unplayable” as servers are hit by DDOS attacks again. This comes after Valve was reported to be experiencing DDOS attacks earlier this year, leaving fans fearing another criminal will pick up where the last one left off.

The Left 4 Dead 2 community is taking to Steam and Reddit to try to get Valve’s attention. Until the issue is fixed, this ruins the game for both the DDOS victim and anyone who joins a game with them, players say, and there’s no sign of this problem getting better anytime soon.

When this was first reported to Valve in January, it said the attacks were coordinated by an individual known in the community as “JG.” Players say JG created a list of Steam users he wanted to attack, particularly those who called them out for abusive in-game behavior. Once the individual was affected, they could no longer play as normal, and the attack also crashed all other games they were participating in.

Reddit user 3yebex made a detailed post describing the situation at the time, and then made another post earlier this month explaining that a new DDOS attack had been reported. This latest attack is believed to be from a new individual and may be using JG’s targeting tools and methods.

It’s time to give up the Left 4 Dead likes

No game will ever surpass Left 4 Dead in the co-op horde shooter genre, so maybe it’s time to move on.

Whatever the cause or motive, the result is the same – the community is unable to play the game. In recent days, players have started responding to a post Valve made about the issue in January, attempting to clarify that the attacks have started again, describing the current state of the game as unplayable and unstable, with one player adding that this is affecting every game they participate in.

It remains to be seen whether Valve can find a permanent solution to this problem, but in the meantime, the company must also expect continued calls from the Team Fortress 2 community, as hackers and abusers have long plagued the servers of Valve’s other major shooter.
