Speed was the cause of the motorcycle accident in Sioux Falls in which a 21-year-old died

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – Sioux Falls police say speed was the factor in a motorcycle-car collision in Sioux Falls on Saturday that left one person dead.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. at the corner of 57th Street and S. Rateliff Avenue, west of 57th Street and Veterans Parkway.

A motorcycle was traveling east on 57th Street. A car was crossing the street to turn left and head west on 57th Street.

Several witnesses said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed. The witnesses’ estimate is approximately 70 miles per hour. Authorities will be investigating this estimate.

The speed limit in this area is 40 miles per hour.

The motorcyclist – a 21-year-old man from Sioux Falls – crashed into the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was wearing a helmet and eye protection.

It is not yet possible to say whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

“The simple explanation was speed – way too fast for that road,” said police spokesman Sam Clemens.

Clemens said this is a good example of why it is important to obey the speed limit.

“It is unfortunate that the motorcyclist died, but the accident could have been prevented if he had driven more slowly.”

According to Clemens, the driver assumed that he had enough time because he did not know the speed of the motorcycle and therefore could not foresee the collision.

There was one person in the car who suffered no visible injuries.
