The final autopsy report of a Pakistani Hindu medical student who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her dorm room in September reveals that she was raped and then murdered.

Police doctor Dr. Qarar Ahmed Abbasi said dusk that according to the final autopsy report, the Larkana student was “murdered by strangulation following rape.”

“The verdict after the autopsy is clear, but depends on a proper police investigation,” he said.

Nimrita Kumari’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her dorm room at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) in Larkana on September 16. She was enrolled in the university’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery course and was in her final year of study.

The autopsy report was released by the Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in Larkana on Wednesday.

According to Dr. Amrita, the forensic pathologist at CMCH, Nimrita’s death was attributed to asphyxiation as the autopsy revealed signs of suffocation due to a ligature on the neck.

The autopsy report states: “The strangulation marks also match the information provided. Such marks are caused either by strangulation or hanging and are to be determined by the state investigative authorities through circumstantial evidence at the crime scene.”

A DNA test confirmed the presence of a male DNA profile, which was detected by semen residues on the deceased’s clothing, while a vaginal swab tested positive for a forced sexual act.

The autopsy report confirmed the statement of Vishal, the deceased’s brother, who insisted that his sister was killed because she was neither depressed nor the kind of person who would end her life.

Following massive protests across the province, the Sindh government ordered a judicial investigation into the case.

The investigation into the murder case, supervised by the District and Sessions Judge of Larkana on the orders of the Sindh High Court (SHC), is still underway.
