The Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart was arrested after allegedly punching the Suns’ Drew Eubanks

Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart was arrested Wednesday and given a charge for allegedly punching Phoenix Suns center Drew Eubanks. This was announced by the Phoenix police.

Stewart was subsequently released by police.

The NBA is investigating the altercation between the Pistons big man and the Suns veteran in the back tunnels of the Phoenix arena, which was first reported by The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania.

Charania said Stewart allegedly punched Eubanks and the league is expected to receive footage of the incident for review. It is unclear what sparked the dispute.

Stewart and Eubanks “fought chest to chest before a swing struck Eubanks’ lip area,” Charania and James L. Edwards III reported. “Police had to intervene to separate the two and inspected the scene,” they added.

Eubanks was outside warming up after the fight.

“The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked and acts of violence like this are unacceptable,” the Suns said in a statement Duane Rankin from Arizona Central. “We fully support Drew and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”

The Pistons visited the Suns on Wednesday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. The two teams played their first duel of the season in November at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Stewart, who has not played since a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 28 due to an ankle injury, is with the Pistons on their Western Conference road trip and is preparing for a return to play after the All-Star break.

The 22-year-old is averaging 11.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 35 games this season while shooting 47.0 percent from the floor and 37.4 percent from distance. He is in his fourth NBA season.

The 27-year-old Eubanks is in his sixth NBA season and in Phoenix for the first time. He averaged 5.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 48 games while shooting 63.7 percent from the field.
