A Code Orange Air Quality Warning has been issued for Monday, July 29, throughout central Pennsylvania.

Counties under warning include Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster and York.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA – An Orange Air Quality Warning has been issued for most of central Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has predicted Monday, July 29, as the day of action for the Pittsburgh and central Pennsylvania regions.

Counties under warning include Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster and York.

On Monday, light winds and high temperatures between 35 and 35 degrees Celsius are likely to contribute to 8-hour average concentrations of ozone in the Code Orange range.

An Air Quality Action Day is declared when the AQI is forecast to be orange or higher. On Air Quality Action Days, young children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit their outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses in the Air Quality Action Day areas are urged to voluntarily contribute to reducing air pollution by:

  • Save electricity by setting the air conditioning to a higher temperature;
  • Combining errands to reduce the number of car trips;
  • Limiting engine idling; and
  • Refueling cars and trucks after dark.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index provides color-coded daily air quality forecasts and reports. Green indicates good air quality, yellow indicates moderate air quality, orange indicates unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups, and red warns of unhealthy pollution levels for everyone.
