As I mentioned, heat advisories were issued Tuesday for most of Southeast Texas. The advisory lasts from noon to 8 p.m. The only exception will be coastal counties where the water will help maintain temperatures and make temperatures feel a few degrees cooler than further north. However, it will still be hot along the coast.

It looks like the temperature in Houston will be over 100 degrees every day this week. Our forecast calls for a heat index between 104 Friday and 107 Tuesday. For this reason, I imagine we could have heat advisories reissued for several days this week.

So what causes high temperatures? Currently, an upper atmospheric high pressure system is located over Mexico. Inside this zone, the air compresses and heats up at the surface. It then expands, creating a dome, hence the name thermal dome. This is a fairly common phenomenon in summer in this part of the country. Next week, it looks like the high will begin to slide eastward, directly over Texas at some point, and is expected to continue moving eastward from there. Because of this, it looks like temperatures could be even warmer next week.

You can see the forecast for the evolution of this maximum in the latest temperature forecasts. The Deep South is expected to experience above-average temperatures for the week of July 2 to 8. You can thank this high pressure system that will move toward the southeast coast of the United States.
