Congress’s Kanhaiya Kumar attacked in northeast Delhi: Two men beat him and throw ink | Delhi News

North East Delhi Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar was allegedly attacked by two men – one slapped him and another threw black ink at him – as he entered the Aam Aadmi Party office in New Delhi after a meeting with a councilor on Friday Usmanpur in north-east Delhi.

While the Congress and Kumar’s office claimed that the attackers were associated with the BJP and were “right-hand men” of sitting MP and North East Delhi candidate Manoj Tiwari, his office denied the claim and accused the Congress of spreading rumours.

The incident took place in the evening when a crowd of AAP and Congress workers and councilors accompanied Kumar. Alleged videos of the incident showed a man with a long beard and a black shirt shouting slogans such as “Kanhaiya bhaiya zindabad”. With a garland and a packet of rose petals in his hand, he walked towards Kumar, ostensibly to garland him, but instead he threw ink on him while another man slapped the Congress leader. Kumar’s followers quickly surrounded the attackers and retaliated.

The PSO deployed by Delhi Police was also present during the incident.

Chhaya Sharma, AAP councilor from Brahmpuri, who moderated the meeting with Kumar, has lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police. She alleged, “The person who did this was sitting next to Manoj Tiwari in a meeting. When I rushed to protect Kanhaiya, they mistreated me and threatened to kill me and my husband.”

DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said action would be taken on the complaint. “It was gathered that…when Chhaya Sharma came down to see off Kanhaiya Kumar, some persons came and garlanded…Kumar. After garlanding him, some people threw ink and tried to attack him. When Chhaya Sharma tried to intervene, they misbehaved and threatened her,” he said.

“Dirty tactics don’t scare me.”

After the incident, Kumar’s office said it had “identified the individuals as BJP men”.

Kumar said, “There is a line that cannot be crossed, even when it comes to politics; You cannot attack a woman based on her political affiliation. I condemn this incident…we voted for you (Tiwari) twice then you must maintain dignity in your position. If I have committed a crime, you must arrest me, but distributing fake videos and sending henchmen is not appropriate.”

Later, Kumar said at a meeting: “You can try to stop me as many times as you want, but I have the blood of freedom fighters running in my veins.” If we are not afraid of the British, we will definitely not be threatened by these people … They believe that people will continue to suffer from their injustices, but people will now answer them. They send their henchmen, attack women and then talk about “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”. They did this in Surat, in Gandhinagar, where candidates made crying videos for sending goons to their houses. But I want to tell them that I am Kanhaiya Kumar and your dirty tactics will not scare me.”

Kumar’s office also circulated a purported photograph showing one of the alleged attackers at a rally where MP Tiwari was speaking, claiming in a statement: “Tiwari is upset at the huge public support Kanhaiya is receiving and fears defeat. “ This is an attempt to attack Kanhaiya by sending his fellow thugs. The people will give the answer to the violence on May 25th.”

Manoj Tiwari’s office replied: “Kanhaiya Kumar is losing the elections in North East Delhi and his team is spreading rumours…We don’t get involved in such petty matters.” Tukde Tukde wale Kumar is trying to create a stir by speaking out of frustration over a baseless claim dragging out his opponent’s name.”

Congress interim leader Devender Yadav said the party would report the incident to the Election Commission. “They (BJP) have nothing to talk about when it comes to development, so they are using these petty tactics to disrupt his election campaign…,” he added.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said, “Faced with a historic defeat, the BJP is once again resorting to its usual attitude of thuggery and violence.” The cowardly attack by the BJP goons on our North East Delhi candidate Kanhaiya Kumar is at its highest unfortunate and shows her desperation.”

He added: “You should know that Kanhaiya is a Babbar Sher of the Congress who will not be fazed by such pathetic acts.” All the workers of the INDIA bloc stand with him against the dirty tactics of this fascist and criminal regime Page.”
