Detroit judge denies bail for man linked to kidnapping and sexual abuse of women

DETROIT – A judge has denied bail to a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women over a decade ago.

Prosecutors say Demetrius Givens’ DNA matches DNA from two brutal attacks, one 10 years ago and the other 12 years ago.

Givens was recently arrested for carrying a concealed weapon – a knife – and his DNA was entered into a national database linking him to the attacks.

The two women spoke in court on Wednesday, May 22nd. The first said she was forced into a vacant house and sexually abused by Givens in 2012.

The other woman said she was attacked in the same way in 2014. She was so upset that the prosecutor read her statement.

DNA was collected after the attacks, but a suspect was never found until Givens’ DNA ran through the database. Prosecutors said samples from both attacks matched Givens.

His defense attorney said Givens was a different person than he was ten years ago and called for his release on bail.

“The evidence presented to this court today was so overwhelming that I would like to send the defendant to prison,” said Judge Kenneth King.

Authorities believe he may be connected to other unexplained attacks.
