Alleged sexual abuser George Tyndall was found dead aged 76

George Tyndall, a former campus gynecologist at the University of Southern California who is accused of sexually abusing several patients, was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday. He was 76.

Tyndall’s defense attorney, Leonard Levine, confirmed the news to the Los Angeles Times. He said a close friend noticed Tyndall was unresponsive after he didn’t return her calls the day before.

Tyndall, who worked for the university for 27 years, was charged with abusing 16 women in 2019 after Los Angeles police conducted the “largest investigation of sexual abuse by a single perpetrator.”

Tyndall was scheduled to stand trial next year for crimes allegedly committed between 2009 and 2016. He was accused of inappropriately touching patients, making harassing comments and taking photos without patients’ consent during gynecological exams at one of the campus health clinics.

In 2021, USC agreed to pay more than $1.1 billion to settle claims related to Tyndall’s alleged abuse, the largest payout of its kind in higher education history.

“I’m not happy that he died,” Audry Nafziger, a former patient who accused Tyndall of abuse, told the LA Times. “I wanted him to be convicted for what he did.”

Levine maintained his client’s innocence following news of his death.

“From the beginning, Dr. Tyndall has strenuously denied all allegations made against him,” Levine said. “All he ever wanted was the day in court, which he was confident would end in his complete exoneration. Neither he nor his accusers will understand that, and that is very unfortunate for everyone involved.”
