Zack Short and Jimmy Herget impress early in Atlanta Braves organization

Although the month isn’t over yet, the Atlanta Braves have been active in terms of making deals so far in May by bringing two new players into the organization, as well as also trading away a player from infield Luis Guillorme.

With Zack Short and Jimmy Herget being those two names, when in May were they each brought to Atlanta, and how has each fared since?

Starting with Short, the 28-year-old was acquired on May 9 from the Boston Red Sox for cash and quickly made an impact at the major league level in the absence of injured third baseman Austin Riley.

So far, Short has started four games defensively for Atlanta at third base where he has posted a perfect defensive percentage. As for his offense, Short certainly made an impact as well, cutting .400/.571/.600 (4-for-10) with two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base with a 2:4K:BB report.

Herget, meanwhile, was also acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on May 2 for cash, but has yet to see action with Atlanta, as all of his outings have been in Triple-A Gwinnett.

With the Stripers, the right-hander has made four relief appearances so far in which he owns a 2.25 ERA on four IPs. Herget also posted a 7:2 K:BB ratio in that span, along with one save.

Looking ahead as well, Short’s role will certainly diminish when Riley returns from injury, but he’s likely made a case for staying in Atlanta as a bench option, while Herget, who despite being in Gwinnett, is a name to know who could spend time with the Braves at some point this season. Will the two be able to maintain this good level of play in the future?
