MARION, Indiana – An Indy man is recovering after being shot and seriously injured in Marion early Monday morning.

According to a Marion police news release, an officer heard several gunshots while patrolling the area of 26th and Home Avenue at around 3:58 a.m. As the officer approached to investigate the incident, he heard three more gunshots coming from the 900 block of East 27th Street, according to police.

At this point, the officer reportedly witnessed an unidentified man fire three more shots before running into a residence in the area.

MPD confirmed that Grant County dispatch had already received several calls reporting gunshots being heard in the area.

The home the man had entered was soon surrounded by MPD officers and their SWAT team, as well as deputies from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

At about the same time, dispatch received a call from the McClure gas station at 2915 S. Adams Street reporting that a man named Marcus Highbaugh, 34, of Indianapolis, had entered the gas station with a gunshot wound and asked for help before collapsing at the front door.

Officers quickly arrived at the gas station and found Highbaugh suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. He was taken by paramedics to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition.

A witness reportedly told officers they were with Highbaugh prior to the shooting, as the couple had been in the area searching for a woman’s residence. Police added that a bullet appeared to have struck the back of the vehicle before seriously wounding Highbaugh.
