Legendary rock producer Steve Albini has died at the age of 61

Respected rock producer and recording engineer Steve Albini has died at the age of 61. Record producer best known for his work on Nirvana’s In utero and Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, died at his recording studio Electric Audio in Chicago, Illinois, Pitchfork reports.

In addition to working with some of rock’s biggest acts, Albini was highly regarded for his contributions to the underground rock and punk scenes. Albini pioneered the noise rock scene with his own bands Shellac and Big Black, with whom he occasionally performed over the years. Additionally, Albini’s great respect for extreme and obscure rock genres was evident in his production work with the bands Neurosis, Weedeater, Helmet and most recently Code Orange, who worked with the producer on their latest record. Albini also contributed greatly to music and audio education, frequently visiting college campuses and even giving guest lessons at the Berklee College of Music.

From contemporary rock to underground extreme metal, Albini was a pioneer in the music recording field and to this day his works and techniques are viewed with the utmost respect and admiration in the recording industry.
