A motorcyclist has died in an overnight collision in Catawba County, according to troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

On Friday around 11:40 p.m., troopers said they responded to and investigated a collision on Oxford School Road near U.S. 70.

Troopers said a 2010 Yamaha motorcycle driven by 56-year-old Wesley Todd Crawford was traveling north, crossed the center line, left the left side of the road and overturned.

According to officials, Crawford was thrown from the motorcycle and died from his injuries at the scene.

According to investigators, excessive speed was the cause of the collision. The roadway in the area was closed for approximately two hours while the investigation took place at the scene.
