Fulton man arrested after high-speed chase, found in wall of house by K-9

A Fulton man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a vehicle pursuit Tuesday.

On Tuesday around 6:45 p.m., Fulton police attempted to stop a vehicle in the city of Fulton after identifying the driver as 31-year-old Timothy Benway, who was wanted on multiple warrants.

Benway was wanted on a warrant for grand larceny, a misdemeanor warrant for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operator and two other misdemeanor warrants.

A Fulton police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Benway, but fled southbound on Route 481 at a high rate of speed to elude police.

Benway was driving at a speed of approximately 124 miles per hour, passing motorists on the right while continuing to attempt to evade police.

Benway eventually exited the highway and entered the village of Phoenix, whereupon police gave up the pursuit. Benway’s vehicle was eventually found unoccupied on Barnes Street.

Police learned that Benway was at a residence in the town of Schroeppel on Oswego River Road. With the assistance of multiple agencies, a search warrant was executed and Benway was eventually located on the wall of a home by an Oswego County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and was taken into custody.

As a result of the pursuit of the vehicle and his previous warrants, Benway was charged with the following:

  • Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a Class D Felony
  • Reckless driving
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operator in the Second Degree
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operator in the Third Degree
  • Third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Multiple traffic violations
  • First-degree criminal contempt, a Class E felony
  • Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, a Class A Misdemeanor
  • Resisting arrest
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree

Benway was remanded to the Oswego County Jail on $1,000 cash bail, $5,000 bond and $10,000 surety for each count.
